New Kiddos, New Fun

We are 3 days into the school year and BOY is it hot!  Today we got out early because it was so hot.  A heat index of 98 degrees is too hot for our non- air conditioned school.  My class was full of a bunch of troopers!  We worked hard and played hard even though it was so hot.  Here are some things from the first day of school.

Project to go along with "The Kissing Hand".  A hand print with a foam heart glued in the middle.

Magnets made with each students' first initial.  They painted their letter and I hot glued to a clothes pin.  Magnets are glued on the back of the clothes pins.  These were sent home with a note saying to hang it on the fridge to keep important first grade papers safe.

Here is my group of silly, fun, creative, smart first graders :)

Back to School!

Well, that came faster than I thought it would!  Here are a few pictures of some new things in my classroom and my new kiddos.

A new addition to my front wall are touch point posters.  I am hoping incorporating touch points into our math lessons will mean counting on fingers will not be needed :)

My fabulous chair that I painted this summer!  I will be the old lady in the chair during reading chart time.  Also the kids will be using this when presenting their work to the rest of the class.

In the back of my room I added another table for our technology center.  There are little computers back there to do Accelerated Reader on, we won't start that until September.  Each of the students in our school has a computer to work on.  Different things I plan to do on the computers are Accelerated Reader, IXL math, Study Ladder, and some projects in the classroom.  We have been in school for about 3 days so far and I think every single student has asked when we get to use the computers.  Also in this area are books on CD.

This is a tracking system I plan to use for AR.  Each student has a star on the side.  The star will move to show progress.  The steps are "I can log in by myself and pass a test", 5 points, 10 points, 15 points, 20 points, 25 points, and 50 points.

The back wall in my classroom got a huge overhaul this summer.  First, my bulletin boards got recovered in animal print paper.  You can only see a couple, I will post more pictures of them later.  At Michael's I found leopard print and zebra stripes paper.  I LOVE them!  The animals at the top of the wall will be used to track Math Fact/Flash Card progress.  Each animal has a Velcro circle in the middle, and I will attach the addition or subtraction facts (+0,+1).  As each student passes a level through timed tests, I will move their marker (grass patches) to show progress.  The white rope/ribbon with the clothes pins will be used to show off art work given to me by students.

My desk.  When I first started coming in at the beginning of August to work in my room, I chose to work on projects like this instead of real work like papers and scheduling :)  I like the way it hides my boring, plain, ugly metal desk.  I use magnets to attach things to it.

I found this idea on Pinterest.  I got these letters at Hobby Lobby (they are wooded) and glued magnets on the backs.  If the class is being too loud, you take down a letter.  If you take down e, s, i and only have NO left, the class can no longer talk while working.  I plan to use this during free time or group project time.  Although, I hope to never get down to just NO :) A teacher can dream right??

Here is our class cactus.  I hope we can keep it alive!  Monday's are cactus watering days and the helper was super excited to do that today!

Hope you all like my classroom additions!  There will be more to come I'm sure!

Happy Teaching!
